Big Wood River, Idaho
Sun Valley Country — Wild trout through Ernest Hemingway's favorite Idaho town
The Big Wood River flows south through the Wood River Valley from the Pioneer Mountains near Ketchum and Sun Valley — Ernest Hemingway's adopted Idaho home — through Hailey and Bellevue before disappearing into the Snake River Plain. This is the most accessible quality trout fishery in south-central Idaho, flowing through one of the state's wealthiest and most culturally rich communities while maintaining a wild trout character that belies the resort town setting.
The Big Wood is a spring-augmented freestone river with tailwater-influenced sections that maintain consistently cold temperatures through the summer — critical in a valley that can see July temperatures over 90°F. The cold springs feeding the river from the Pioneer and Sawtooth ranges keep water temperatures in the trout zone even during the hottest weeks, producing reliable fishing from June through October.
The Ketchum and Hailey sections receive the most fishing pressure due to easy access and proximity to the resort community. More experienced anglers head above Ketchum toward the Sawtooth National Recreation Area where the river is smaller, more technical, and significantly less pressured. Wild rainbow averaging 12–16 inches dominate throughout, with some impressive brown trout in the deeper pools of the valley section.
The Big Wood is almost always fished in combination with Silver Creek — the two rivers share a regional character and the hour's drive between them makes a day split between the Big Wood's freestone fishing and Silver Creek's technical spring creek water one of south-central Idaho's finest fly fishing itineraries.
Ketchum — Town Access
River access throughout Ketchum via public parks and the Big Wood River Trail. Easy access from downtown. Most pressure but excellent water.
Hailey — Valley Section
Multiple bridge crossings and public access south of Ketchum. Good valley fishing with slightly less pressure than the Ketchum town section.
Above Ketchum — SNRA
Sawtooth National Recreation Area access north of Ketchum. Smaller, more technical water with wild cutthroat presence in upper reaches.
Rainbow Trout
Dominant species throughout. Wild fish averaging 12–16 inches. Active surface feeders during PMD and Caddis hatches. Strong fighters in the Wood's current.
Brown Trout
Present in deeper valley section pools. Larger than rainbows on average. Most active during fall pre-spawn and evening hatches.
Combine Big Wood River fishing with Silver Creek — both offer exceptional water within an hour of each other in the Wood River Valley.
The Sun Valley area's cultural amenities make a fishing trip here genuinely luxurious — excellent restaurants, galleries, and mountain biking alongside quality trout water.
Above Ketchum in the SNRA the river becomes smaller and more technical — bring a short rod (7.5 ft) for the tight canyon sections.
Hemingway fished the Big Wood and wrote about it — visiting the Hemingway Memorial above town adds historical depth to the experience.
