About the Big Wood River
South-Central Idaho — Wood River Valley · Ketchum to Bellevue — Sun Valley Tailwater

The Big Wood River flows south through the Wood River Valley from the Pioneer Mountains near Ketchum and Sun Valley — Ernest Hemingway's adopted Idaho home — through Hailey and Bellevue before disappearing into the Snake River Plain. This is the most accessible quality trout fishery in south-central Idaho, flowing through one of the state's wealthiest and most culturally rich communities while maintaining a wild trout character that belies the resort town setting.

The Big Wood is a spring-augmented freestone river with tailwater-influenced sections that maintain consistently cold temperatures through the summer — critical in a valley that can see July temperatures over 90°F. The cold springs feeding the river from the Pioneer and Sawtooth ranges keep water temperatures in the trout zone even during the hottest weeks, producing reliable fishing from June through October.

The Ketchum and Hailey sections receive the most fishing pressure due to easy access and proximity to the resort community. More experienced anglers head above Ketchum toward the Sawtooth National Recreation Area where the river is smaller, more technical, and significantly less pressured. Wild rainbow averaging 12–16 inches dominate throughout, with some impressive brown trout in the deeper pools of the valley section.

The Big Wood is almost always fished in combination with Silver Creek — the two rivers share a regional character and the hour's drive between them makes a day split between the Big Wood's freestone fishing and Silver Creek's technical spring creek water one of south-central Idaho's finest fly fishing itineraries.
