About Pyramid Lake
Pyramid Lake in northwestern Nevada is one of the most extraordinary and culturally significant fishing destinations in North America โ a vast, ancient desert lake on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe's reservation, home to the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, the largest cutthroat subspecies in the world and a fish of enormous cultural importance to the Paiute people who have fished this lake for thousands of years.
The Lahontan Cutthroat at Pyramid Lake are genuinely massive fish โ the world record (41 pounds) was set here in 1925, and fish of 10โ20 pounds are caught every winter season by persistent anglers. These are not hatchery fish in the conventional sense โ they are a carefully managed, tribally-administered wild population descended from broodstock maintained through decades of intensive restoration work by the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe after the species was extirpated from the lake in the 1940s.
Fishing Pyramid Lake requires a tribal fishing permit from the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe โ not a state fishing license. The tribe manages the fishery entirely, sets season dates (typically October through June), and maintains the hatchery that sustains the Lahontan Cutthroat population. Respecting the tribal management and regulations is not just legally required but essential to the fishery's continued existence.
The fishing itself is a unique experience: standing on one of the alkaline tufa formations or wading from the sandy shore into the turquoise desert lake, casting large leeches and streamers into water that can be spectacularly clear, watching for the massive dark shapes of Lahontan Cutthroat cruising the shallows. Winter is the prime season โ fish are most active in cold water and most accessible in the shallows.
Fishing Techniques
๐ฃ
Wading from Shore / Tufa
The classic Pyramid Lake approach. Wade from the beach or stand on tufa formations and cast large streamers and leeches. The 'Pyramid Lake Stance' โ standing on a stepladder in the water โ is traditional to reach fish cruising beyond comfortable wading depth.
๐ฃ
Float Tube
Effective in designated areas. Work along the tufa formations and rocky points where fish concentrate. Check tribal regulations for current float tube rules.
โต
Boat Fishing
Permitted with tribal permit. Allows coverage of more water. Particularly useful for reaching the Nixon and Pelican Point areas.

Access Points
๐ Sutcliffe โ South Shore
Primary tribal fishing headquarters. Tribal permits purchased here. Best shore fishing access. Pyramid Lake Marina nearby.
๐ Pelican Point
North shore access. Excellent Lahontan Cutthroat water. Less crowded than Sutcliffe. Spectacular views of the pyramid-shaped tufa formation.
๐ Anaho Island Wildlife Refuge
The famous tufa pyramid formation. A National Wildlife Refuge โ no landing permitted. But the waters around it are prime fishing.
Pro Tips
- โThe 'Pyramid Lake Stance' โ standing on a stepladder in the water โ is the local tradition for reaching fish just beyond comfortable wading range. Bring a step stool.
- โFish are most active and most accessible in November through March when cold water temperatures keep Lahontan Cutthroat in the shallows.
- โLarge, dark Woolly Buggers (size 2โ4) stripped slowly are the most reliable pattern by a significant margin.
- โBuy your tribal permit before arriving โ Sutcliffe is the only permit source and it's a long drive to be turned away.
Regulations
TRIBAL PERMIT REQUIRED โ available from Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe at Sutcliffe. No Nevada state fishing license required. Season typically October through June. Wading permitted in designated areas only. Strictly follow all tribal regulations โ violators face serious penalties and damage the relationship between anglers and the tribe.
