About Blue Mesa Reservoir
Blue Mesa Reservoir near Gunnison is Colorado's largest body of water β€” a 9,000-acre high-altitude reservoir on the Gunnison River that has developed into one of the finest Kokanee Salmon fisheries in the Western United States. Created by Blue Mesa Dam in 1966, the reservoir has benefited from decades of Colorado Parks and Wildlife stocking programs that have produced self-sustaining Kokanee populations of exceptional size and abundance. The Kokanee at Blue Mesa are the lake's signature fish β€” landlocked sockeye salmon averaging 14–18 inches that school in massive numbers throughout the summer, provide spectacular sport on small bright flies and hardware, and stage a dramatic spawning run into the Gunnison River's tributaries each September and October. The fall Kokanee run turns the inlet streams pink-red with spawning fish and provides some of the most visually spectacular fishing events in Colorado. Lake Trout grow to exceptional size in Blue Mesa's deep water β€” specimens over 30 pounds are caught annually, and the Colorado state record lake trout (50.8 pounds) was taken here. While not conventional fly fishing targets, large lake trout can be encountered on deep sinking lines in the transition zones between deep and shallow water during fall turnover. Brown Trout from the Taylor River and Gunnison River tributaries supplement the stillwater fishery, with large browns moving into the reservoir's shallower arms in fall. These fish can average 16–22 inches and provide excellent fly fishing opportunities in the Cebolla Creek and Los Pinos River arms.
Fishing Techniques
🚣
Float Tube / Boat
Primary approach for Kokanee and brown trout. Work the upper arms near the Gunnison River inlet for larger brown trout. Open water trolling for Kokanee.
β›΅
Trolling β€” Kokanee
The most effective Kokanee technique. Small bright flies and spinners trolled at the school depth. Find schools with a fish finder for best results.
🎣
Shore β€” Fall Spawners
September–October brings Kokanee into accessible tributaries (Cebolla Creek, Los Pinos) for their spawning run β€” spectacular visual fishing experience.

The star of Blue Mesa. Wild averaging 14–18 inches in summer. Spectacular fall spawning run. The reservoir's most abundant and accessible fly fishing target.
Lake Trout
State record 50.8 lbs was from Blue Mesa. Deep-water fish accessible to fly rods in fall on sinking lines. Averaging 5–20+ pounds in fishing.
Brown Trout
Large browns from the Gunnison and Taylor River system enter the reservoir's arms. Averaging 16–22 inches. Best fall fly fishing in the upper arms.
Access Points
πŸ“ Elk Creek Marina
Central reservoir marina with boat launch and facilities. Primary access point and NPS visitor center.
πŸ“ Lake Fork Arm
Upper arm near the Los Pinos River inlet. Best fall brown trout fishing. Less boat traffic than the main basin.
πŸ“ Cebolla Creek Area
Western arm. Good Kokanee access and the primary fall spawning run stream. Shore fishing during September–October run.
Pro Tips
  • β†’The fall Kokanee spawning run in September transforms the inlet streams β€” fish turning pink-red in shallow water is a Colorado spectacle worth witnessing regardless of fishing.
  • β†’Large Brown Trout move into the Lake Fork and Cebolla arms in October as temperatures cool β€” this is the prime fly fishing window for the reservoir's largest fish.
  • β†’Blue Mesa's elevation and afternoon thunderstorms mean morning fishing is essential β€” be off the water by 2pm during summer storm season.
  • β†’Combine with the Gunnison River's Gold Medal tailwater and Black Canyon access for a complete Gunnison Country fly fishing trip.
Regulations
Colorado fishing license required. Kokanee may have specific bag limits. Lake trout have a slot limit β€” check Colorado Parks and Wildlife regulations. NPS Curecanti National Recreation Area rules apply.
