About Georgetown Lake
Georgetown Lake sits at 6,375 feet in the Anaconda-Pintler country of western Montana โ a shallow, weedy 2,800-acre reservoir with exceptional rainbow trout populations and some of the finest chironomid fishing in the state. The lake's shallow, productive character creates conditions that remind experienced stillwater anglers of the famous British Columbia Interior lakes that defined the modern chironomid stillwater tradition.
Rainbow Trout average 15โ20 inches throughout Georgetown Lake's productive weed beds, with large fish over 24 inches caught each season by skilled float tube anglers working suspended chironomid patterns at precise depths. The lake's shallowness (maximum 25 feet) means the fish are never far from the surface and chironomid suspender fishing can be productive in as little as 6โ10 feet of water during peak emergences.
Georgetown Lake's chironomid hatches are legendary among Montana stillwater anglers โ the lake produces massive emergences from ice-out through September, and matching the size, color, and depth of the naturals is the primary key to success. The lake's rainbow trout have seen considerable pressure over the years, making precise pattern matching increasingly important on weekends and through the peak summer season.
The Anaconda area provides an interesting cultural backdrop โ the historic copper smelting town has reinvented itself as an outdoor recreation hub, and the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness rising to the south adds dramatic mountain scenery to the Georgetown Lake experience.
Fishing Techniques
๐ฃ
Float Tube โ Chironomid
The definitive Georgetown Lake approach. Suspend chironomid patterns at precisely the depth of feeding fish. Indicator fishing in 6โ18 feet of water.
โต
Small Boat
Canoes and small motorized boats allowed. Cover more water during sparse hatches.
๐ฃ
Shore / Wade
Several shore areas accessible at campgrounds. Best in spring when fish are active in the margins.

Access Points
๐ Stuart Mill Bay โ Primary Launch
Main boat launch and facilities on the north shore. Good float tube access to the productive weed beds.
๐ East Shore Campgrounds
USFS campgrounds with lake access on the east shore. Good morning chironomid water with less wind exposure.
๐ West Shore
Less accessible but productive weed edges along the west shore. Better wind protection in afternoon storms.
Pro Tips
- โGeorgetown Lake's chironomids require precise depth matching โ spend 5 minutes watching for surface rises and adjusting your indicator depth before fishing.
- โMorning (7โ10am) is the prime chironomid window before afternoon winds make indicator fishing difficult.
- โThe lake fishes exceptionally well on overcast days when fish remain in the upper water column throughout the day.
- โCombine with the Bitterroot River or Clark Fork for a complete western Montana trip covering both stillwater and freestone.
Regulations
Montana fishing license required. Check Montana FWP for current Georgetown Lake regulations. Some sections may have special gear restrictions.
