About Walker Lake
Walker Lake in Mineral County is one of the Great Basin's most ecologically significant โ€” and troubled โ€” water bodies. A terminal lake with no outlet, Walker Lake has been shrinking for over a century due to upstream agricultural water diversions that have reduced its volume by over 90% since 1882. This shrinkage has concentrated salts and minerals to the point where the lake's fish populations crashed entirely by the early 2000s. The Nevada Department of Wildlife, in partnership with the Walker Lake Working Group, has been implementing flow restoration measures since the mid-2010s, and the results have been cautiously optimistic โ€” water quality has improved enough to sustain Lahontan Cutthroat Trout reintroductions, and fish populations have been rebuilding in the lake's restored water column. Walker Lake Lahontan Cutthroat are the same species as the world-renowned Pyramid Lake fish โ€” historically, fish of extraordinary size (30+ pounds) inhabited Walker Lake before the 20th century diversions. The restoration program aims to re-establish self-sustaining populations of these magnificent native fish, and the early fish stocked into the improving lake conditions are growing rapidly on Walker Lake's abundant tui chub prey base. Fishing Walker Lake today is both a conservation act and a frontier fishing experience โ€” you are fishing a lake in restoration, catching fish that represent the front edge of a recovery effort. Check Nevada DWR for current season status as regulations change based on restoration progress.
Fishing Techniques
๐Ÿšฃ
Float Tube
Best for the productive nearshore areas where Lahontan Cutthroat cruise. Large Woolly Buggers and streamers stripped slowly.
๐ŸŽฃ
Shore Fishing
The primary access method. Wade the sandy beaches and fish large streamers into the deeper water.
โ›ต
Small Boat
Canoe or kayak access from the state recreation area. Allows coverage of more productive water.

Lahontan Cutthroat
The restoration target โ€” native subspecies being reintroduced as water quality improves. Fish are growing rapidly on the lake's tui chub forage base. Catch and release critical.
Access Points
๐Ÿ“ Walker Lake State Recreation Area
Primary access on the north end. Nevada state recreation fee. Shore fishing, boat launch, and camping.
๐Ÿ“ Hawthorne Area
South end access near the town of Hawthorne. Good shore fishing access.
Pro Tips
  • โ†’Walker Lake's restoration is still in progress โ€” fish conservatively and release every Lahontan Cutthroat you catch.
  • โ†’The historical significance of this lake โ€” once home to 30-pound Lahontan Cutthroat โ€” makes every fish an ambassador for what might return.
  • โ†’Combine with Pyramid Lake (2 hours north) for the full Lahontan Cutthroat experience in both Nevada's greatest desert lakes.
  • โ†’Monitor Walker Lake Working Group updates for current water quality and restoration progress before planning your trip.
Regulations
Nevada fishing license required. CHECK NDOW ANNUALLY โ€” Walker Lake Lahontan Cutthroat regulations change based on restoration status. Season dates and catch rules are subject to change without notice. Always verify current rules before fishing.
