About Convict Lake
Convict Lake sits at 7,583 feet in the Eastern Sierra just south of Mammoth Lakes โ€” a small, strikingly beautiful alpine lake enclosed by the near-vertical walls of the Wheeler Crest and Convict Canyon, with the Inyo National Forest surrounding a fishery that is far more productive than its small size suggests. The lake takes its name from an 1871 incident when a group of escaped convicts hid in the canyon after a shootout โ€” though today's visitors come for the exceptional scenery and quality wild trout. Rainbow and Brown Trout average 12โ€“18 inches throughout, supplemented by California DFW stocking but maintaining a meaningful wild component in the cold, clear alpine water. The lake's small size (170 acres) means that float tube anglers can cover the entire productive weed zone in a morning session, and the fish density is remarkable for a California alpine lake with public access. The canyon walls rising over 2,000 feet above the lake on three sides create a sheltered, calm morning environment before afternoon convective winds develop โ€” timing morning fishing at Convict is the single most important variable for success. The surrounding scenery โ€” the golden granite, the dark pine forests, and the brilliant blue of the lake โ€” makes every morning at Convict genuinely spectacular regardless of fish activity. The Convict Creek below the lake provides an excellent supplementary fishing option โ€” a short freestone stream with wild fish that is particularly productive in the spring and fall transition periods.
Fishing Techniques
๐Ÿšฃ
Float Tube
Most effective approach. Work chironomid suspenders over the weed beds in the lake's calm morning hours.
๐ŸŽฃ
Shore Wading
Rocky shore perimeter allows wade access. Best early season before weeds become dense.
โ›ต
Small Boat
Rowboat rentals available at the resort. Good for covering the deeper sections for large brown trout.

Species
Rainbow Trout
Dominant and abundant. Mix of wild and stocked fish averaging 12โ€“16 inches. Active Callibaetis and chironomid feeders.
Brown Trout
Present in deeper sections. Averaging 14โ€“20 inches. Best fall streamer fishing near the canyon walls.
Access Points
๐Ÿ“ Convict Lake Resort
Full facilities including boat rentals, camping, and a excellent restaurant. Primary access. Open May through October.
๐Ÿ“ East Shore Trail
Hiking trail circles the lake providing walk-in shore access. Excellent views and multiple wade fishing areas.
๐Ÿ“ Convict Creek Inlet
North end inlet. Best rainbow fishing in spring when fish stage near the creek inflow.
Pro Tips
  • โ†’Fish before 10am โ€” afternoon canyon winds make float tube and indicator fishing increasingly difficult as the day warms.
  • โ†’The canyon views from the east shore trail are among the finest in the Eastern Sierra โ€” plan a circumnavigation hike after the morning fishing.
  • โ†’Convict Lake Resort's restaurant is genuinely excellent โ€” plan a breakfast before fishing and dinner after for the complete experience.
  • โ†’Combine with Crowley Lake (15 minutes north) and the Owens River for a complete Mammoth Lakes fishing weekend.
Regulations
California fishing license required. Check CDFW for current Convict Lake regulations. Standard Eastern Sierra trout rules apply.
