About Eagle Lake
Eagle Lake in Lassen County is one of California's most ecologically unique fisheries β€” a 27,000-acre alkaline lake in the high desert of northeastern California that is the exclusive native habitat of the Eagle Lake Rainbow Trout, a distinct subspecies found nowhere else on earth. The Eagle Lake Rainbow has evolved over thousands of years in the lake's warm, alkaline (pH 8.9–9.4) water, developing physiological adaptations that allow it to thrive in conditions that would stress or kill conventional rainbow strains. These adaptations have made the Eagle Lake Rainbow highly valuable to fishery managers β€” the strain is used in stocking programs throughout California and beyond precisely because of its tolerance for warm, alkaline conditions. In Eagle Lake itself, the fish grow to remarkable sizes on the lake's abundant tui chub population, with fish averaging 3–5 pounds and exceptional specimens over 8 pounds caught each season. The lake's remote location in Lassen County and its alkaline character mean fewer anglers and genuinely wild fishing conditions. The season is bounded by the lake's extremes β€” too warm in summer (when the alkaline water can become hostile even for Eagle Lake Rainbows), too cold and windswept in deep winter. The sweet spots are fall (October–November) and spring (March–April) when temperatures are optimal and the fish are most active and accessible. Eagle Lake's remote, high-desert setting β€” the surrounding Great Basin sage, the volcanic landscape of Lassen County, and the lake's striking blue-green alkaline color β€” gives it a character entirely different from the Sierra Nevada lakes to the south.
Fishing Techniques
β›΅
Boat Fishing
Most effective approach. Troll large Woolly Buggers and streamers along the western shore weed edges. Electric motor for quiet approach.
🚣
Float Tube
Work the weed edges near Merrill Campground and the stone jetty area in spring and fall.
🎣
Shore Fishing
Stone jetty at the south end and Merrill Campground area provide good shore access in prime seasons.

Pro Tips
  • β†’Eagle Lake is CLOSED in summer β€” the only California lake with a mandatory summer closure to protect the endemic rainbow during warm-water stress.
  • β†’The Eagle Lake Rainbow is found nowhere else β€” handle carefully and release quickly. You are fishing with an irreplaceable genetic heritage.
  • β†’October and November provide the finest fishing combined with the fall sage and juniper color of Lassen County's high desert.
  • β†’Combine with the Hat Creek and Pit River drainages (1.5 hours south) for a complete northeastern California volcanic plateau fishing trip.
Regulations
California fishing license required. Eagle Lake season is typically October through April β€” the lake is closed May through September. Check CDFW for current season dates. CLOSED IN SUMMER.
