Overview

Eleven Mile Reservoir is the 3,405-acre lake behind Eleven Mile Canyon Dam on the South Platte River, at about 8,600 feet on the southern edge of South Park, and the centerpiece of Eleven Mile State Park. Water comes down from Spinney Mountain Reservoir through the Dream Stream, the short stretch of South Platte between the two lakes, and leaves through Eleven Mile Canyon below the dam. The fishery is broader than Spinney's: rainbow, brown, cutthroat and cutbow trout, northern pike, kokanee salmon and a large population of carp in the shallow bays. There are no lake trout here. The reservoir is open year round and ice fishes hard from roughly December through February, then fishes best from ice-out in April into June and again in September and October as the water cools. Chironomids catch fish from opening week on, scuds are in the diet all season, Callibaetis and damsels run June through August, and leeches work any month the water is open. Pike are the sleeper fly-rod target on big streamers along the weed edges in early summer. Kokanee are present but snagging is prohibited here, unlike at some Colorado reservoirs, and fishing within 100 feet of the inlet is flies and lures only and catch and release. A buoy line closes the water near the dam. Three ramps serve the lake, two at North Shore and one at Witcher's Cove, and this is big open water: wind and fast-rising storms are the main hazard.

Timing checked against

Chironomid (Fly Shack Apr-Nov; SPFS 'chironomids catching fish since opening day' in late April/May and still in October), Callibaetis (Fly Shack Jun-Aug; SPFS strong in mid-August; Angler's Covey Callibaetis emergers), Damselfly (Fly Shack Jun-Aug; SPFS damsels Jun-Aug) and Leech all agree with our chart within a month; kokanee are present (Angler's Covey). Eleven Mile is open year-round and ice fishes Dec-Feb (SPFS), which is why Mar leech is tolerable.

Season and regulations

Eleven Mile is open all year. Colorado Parks and Wildlife park rules: fishing within 100 feet of the mouth of the inlet is flies and lures only and catch and release; live minnows are prohibited; snagging kokanee is prohibited; all fishing is closed inside the buoy line near the dam on the east end and from islands and docks. Daily bag limits for trout, pike and kokanee follow the statewide table in the CPW fishing brochure, and a Colorado fishing license is required at 16.

A state park pass is required for every vehicle, trailered boats must pass an aquatic nuisance species inspection each time they launch, and body-contact water activities are prohibited. Confirm current rules with the Colorado Parks and Wildlife fishing brochure and the park page before your trip.

Facts checked against

Removed lake trout (Mackinaw) from the species list; neither CPW nor the local shops list them, and the copy's fall lake trout tactic was dropped with it. Added cutbow, carp and the CPW rules on kokanee snagging, the inlet and the dam closure. Confirmed 3,405 acres, roughly 8,600 feet, the South Platte impoundment and the pike and kokanee presence.
