About Crane Prairie Reservoir
Crane Prairie Reservoir in the Deschutes National Forest is one of Oregon's most unique and productive stillwater fisheries โ€” a shallow, warmwater-influenced reservoir famous for its trophy Largemouth Bass fly fishing alongside an exceptional Rainbow Trout population. The lake's distinctive drowned timber (standing dead trees remaining from the original forest flooded when the reservoir was created) creates a habitat mosaic of extraordinary richness for both warm and cold water species. The Largemouth Bass fishery at Crane Prairie is one of the finest in Oregon for fly gear โ€” the combination of abundant dead timber providing ambush cover and the lake's warm, weedy shallows creates perfect bass habitat. Fish averaging 2โ€“4 pounds with exceptional specimens over 6 pounds inhabit the timber structure, and topwater popper fishing around the drowned trees is one of Oregon's most exciting fly fishing experiences. Rainbow Trout averaging 16โ€“22 inches provide the lake's other exceptional fly fishing opportunity โ€” large, wild rainbows that have grown fat on the reservoir's abundant chironomids, Callibaetis, and damselflies. The combination of trophy bass and large rainbows in the same water is genuinely unusual and makes Crane Prairie a destination unlike any other in the Pacific Northwest. The drowned timber is both the lake's greatest fishing asset and its primary navigation hazard โ€” proceed slowly by boat and always have a float tube option for accessing the most timber-dense areas.
Fishing Techniques
๐ŸŽฃ
Topwater Bass
The most exciting approach. Cast poppers and Dahlberg Divers around the drowned timber at dawn and dusk. Bass hold tight to the structure.
๐Ÿšฃ
Float Tube โ€” Trout
Work chironomid suspenders and Callibaetis nymphs through the open water areas between timber. Excellent trophy rainbow action.
โ›ต
Small Boat
Navigate carefully around the timber. Electric motor essential for quiet approach to bass structure.

Pro Tips
  • โ†’Crane Prairie is Oregon's best bass-on-fly lake โ€” don't overlook the largemouth in favor of the trout. Both fisheries are exceptional.
  • โ†’Dawn topwater bass fishing around the drowned timber is one of the most exciting experiences in Oregon stillwater fishing.
  • โ†’The drowned timber creates navigation hazards โ€” always carry a pushpole or paddle to free your motor from submerged snags.
  • โ†’Combine with Wickiup Reservoir (10 minutes south) for a complete central Oregon stillwater trip covering trophy browns alongside Crane Prairie's mixed fishery.
Regulations
Oregon fishing license required. Check ODFW for current Crane Prairie regulations. Largemouth bass slot limits may apply. Some sections restricted to non-motorized craft.
