About Fish Lake
Fish Lake sits at 8,843 feet in Fishlake National Forest โ€” Utah's highest major lake and one of the state's most consistently productive trophy stillwater fisheries. The lake is famous for its populations of Splake (a brook trout ร— lake trout hybrid) and Tiger Trout (a brown trout ร— brook trout hybrid), two unusual hybrid species that grow to exceptional size in Fish Lake's cold, clear water and provide some of the most exciting stillwater fly fishing in Utah. The Splake at Fish Lake average 18โ€“24 inches with exceptional fish over 28 inches documented each season. These are aggressive, powerful fish โ€” they combine the lake trout's size potential with the brook trout's willingness to rise to flies, creating a hybrid that fly fishers find irresistible. Tiger Trout, with their striking marbled golden-brown pattern, average slightly smaller but are among the most visually stunning freshwater fish in the American West. Rainbow and Brown Trout also inhabit Fish Lake in good numbers, providing more conventional fly fishing alongside the trophy hybrids. The lake's tributary streams โ€” Johnson Creek and Pelican Canyon Creek โ€” provide good wade fishing when fish stack up near the inlets in spring and fall. Fish Lake's aspen forests are among Utah's finest โ€” the surrounding Pando grove is the world's largest living organism by mass (a single clonal aspen colony covering 106 acres), and fall visits combine exceptional fishing with the most spectacular autumn color display in Utah.
Fishing Techniques
๐Ÿšฃ
Float Tube / Pontoon
Primary approach. Work the weed edges and drop-offs with large leech patterns for splake and tiger trout. Chironomid suspenders for rainbows over the main basin.
โ›ต
Boat Fishing
Motorized boats allowed. Troll large Woolly Buggers along the depth contours for trophy splake. Electric motor recommended for quiet approach in shallows.
๐ŸŽฃ
Inlet Wading
Johnson Creek and Pelican Canyon Creek inlets. Spring and fall concentration of fish near the inlet mouths. Best early morning.

Access Points
๐Ÿ“ Fish Lake Lodge โ€” Main Access
Historic lodge with boat launch and facilities on the east shore. Open Memorial Day through October. Full services available.
๐Ÿ“ Johnson Creek Inlet

Pro Tips
  • โ†’Large black Woolly Buggers stripped on an intermediate line are the most reliable splake pattern โ€” fish them along the weed edges at dawn.
  • โ†’Tiger trout are the most visually striking fish in Utah โ€” handle carefully and photograph before release.
  • โ†’The Pando aspen clone surrounding the lake turns spectacular gold in late September โ€” combine fall fishing with the color display for Utah's finest autumn experience.
  • โ†’Fish Lake Lodge has operated since 1932 โ€” the historic cabins and restaurant make this an excellent overnight destination.
Regulations
Utah fishing license required. Fish Lake has special regulations for splake and tiger trout โ€” check UDWR Central Region. Daily and possession limits apply. Some sections may be artificial lures only. Access road typically opens late May โ€” call ahead in early season.
