About Fremont Lake
Fremont Lake near Pinedale is Wyoming's second largest natural lake β a deep, glacier-carved alpine lake at 7,375 feet beneath the Wind River Range's highest peaks, home to trophy Lake Trout that grow to exceptional size in its cold, clear water. The lake reaches depths of 600 feet, creating habitat for mackinaw that average 5β20 pounds with exceptional specimens over 30 pounds caught each season.
The lake's glacial origins are visible in every direction β the Green River Lakes, the Bridger Wilderness peaks (including Gannett Peak, Wyoming's highest summit), and the broad Wind River Range valley combine to create one of Wyoming's finest mountain lake settings. The Pinedale area has developed excellent outdoor infrastructure around the lake, with boat launches, guide services, and fly fishing shops serving the growing stillwater angling community.
Kokanee Salmon provide the most accessible summer fly fishing β schools of these landlocked sockeye average 12β16 inches and provide excellent sport on bright attractor patterns trolled through the open water. Rainbow Trout in the 12β18 inch range inhabit the shallower inlet areas near the Fremont Creek drainage.
The Wind River Range's afternoon thunderstorms are a genuine concern at Fremont Lake β always plan morning fishing sessions and be off the water before 2pm during summer storm season.
