The water

Sections and species

Buena Vista to Browns Canyon

The Nathrop gauge on this page sits between Buena Vista and Salida, in the middle basin. Above it the river runs past Buena Vista with walk-in access at the town river park and from county roads, and below it the Arkansas drops into Browns Canyon National Monument. The standard canyon float puts in at Ruby Mountain and takes out at Hecla Junction; both are also walk-in access points for wading anglers who work up or down from the ramps, but the heart of the canyon is boat water shared with a heavy summer rafting fleet.

Salida

Salida is the wade-fishing hub. The river runs through town past the whitewater park and Riverside Park, and public access continues through the Salida stretch at Stone Bridge and along US 50 east of town. ArkAnglers and other local shops post conditions for the upper, middle and lower basins separately, which is worth reading because flows and temperatures differ from Leadville to Cañon City.

Bighorn Sheep Canyon: Howard to Coaldale and below

Downstream of Salida the river enters Bighorn Sheep Canyon, where US 50 follows the water through Howard, Coaldale, Cotopaxi and Texas Creek to Parkdale. This is the lower basin, not the upper river, and it holds the same wild brown trout with numerous highway pull-offs and BLM access. The Gold Medal designation ends at the US 50 bridge at Parkdale above the Royal Gorge.

Brown trout

The Arkansas is a wild brown trout river first. Browns reproduce naturally throughout the Gold Medal water and outnumber rainbows everywhere. They feed hardest during the spring caddis hatch, on golden stones and PMDs in early summer, and again in the fall before spawning, when the baetis hatches and streamer fishing pick up.

Rainbow trout

Rainbows here are largely Hofer-strain fish stocked by Colorado Parks and Wildlife since 2009 because that strain resists whirling disease; they are a growing minority alongside the wild browns. They take the same attractor dries and nymphs and tend to hold in faster, more oxygenated water than the browns.

Season and regulations

The river is open year-round and fishes in winter on midges during mild spells. Runoff usually pushes flows past safe wading from mid May into late June. Local shops and guides consider roughly 250 to 700 cfs at Nathrop the comfortable wading range; wading gets hard above that and floats need 500 cfs or more. That wading range is the one the flow comparison on this page uses.

Gold Medal water runs from the Lake Fork confluence near Leadville to Parkdale. The statewide bag limit of 4 trout applies except in the posted special-regulation reaches, which are flies and lures only with reduced limits, and live baitfish are prohibited on the Arkansas above Parkdale. Check the current Colorado Parks and Wildlife fishing brochure and its Upper Arkansas map for the exact reaches.

Facts checked against

Corrected the section order and names (Howard to Coaldale is Bighorn Sheep Canyon downstream of Salida, not an upper canyon), noted that Browns Canyon has walk-in access at Ruby Mountain and Hecla Junction rather than being float-only, and removed the invented 14-18 inch brown trout average and 24 inch claims. Rainbows described as stocked Hofer-strain fish, browns as wild. Gold Medal extent (Lake Fork to Parkdale, 2014) confirmed. Ideal flow narrowed from 200-2,000 to the 250-700 cfs wading range.
