Timing checked against

A run-timing table. Chagrin River Outfitters (October 15 to April 30) and Ohio Fly Fishing Guides (late October to mid-April, best October to December and March to April) agree within a month. The stonefly row reflects late-winter nymphing and is not dated by either source; the smallmouth row follows Ohio Fly Fishing Guides only.

The gauge decides the day

On the Grand, look at the Painesville gauge before you look at anything else. Chagrin River Outfitters publishes its working ranges for this gauge: 100 to 400 cfs for indicator and nymph fishing, 200 to 800 cfs for swinging flies, with wading rated easy below 200, moderate from 200 to 400 and hard above 400. The river is long for a Lake Erie tributary, about 103 miles from its Geauga County source east into Trumbull and Ashtabula counties and back west through Lake County to Fairport Harbor, draining 712 square miles. The shop's own advice is to call it at 440-247-7110 for current conditions, to tighten your wading belt, and to carry a staff.

The USGS record at Painesville shows the seasonal shape: monthly means near 260 cfs in August and 370 in September, then 556 in October, 1,070 in November and roughly 1,500 to 2,000 cfs from December through March. In the three weeks before September 24, 2026 it ran from 545 cfs after rain down to about 39 cfs, low even for September.

When the fish are in

Chagrin River Outfitters guides steelhead from October 15 through April 30. Ohio Fly Fishing Guides says the season starts in late October and usually runs through mid-April as long as the water stays cool, with October through December and March and April the best months; January and February can fish well if a hard freeze does not lock the river up. Both put the peak in the same two windows.

The fish are stocked, not wild. Ohio's Division of Wildlife planted 80,020 steelhead yearlings in the Grand in 2025 and targets 80,000 for 2026; earlier years ran from 79,999 in 2024 to 102,114 in 2021. The yearlings go in during April and early May at roughly 6 to 8 inches; the last few years have been mostly Little Manistee River and Shasta strain fish.

Fairport Harbor to Harpersfield, on public ground

The Division's steelhead map for the Grand marks the public water from the Fairport Harbor breakwall and Mason's Landing up through Painesville: Indian Point Park, Hidden Valley Park, Painesville City Park at the old dam, Riverview Park, Hogsback Ridge Park and Helen Hazen Wyman Park, with Harpersfield Dam at the upper end. The same map spells out Ohio's access law: you may fish only from public property, and on private land, including the streambed, you need the owner's permission.

Above Painesville the river is one of Ohio's designated wild and scenic rivers, the second in the state, named in 1974. The wild section runs 23 miles from the Harpersfield covered bridge down to the railroad trestle south of Painesville, and the scenic section 33 miles from US 322 in Ashtabula County down to Harpersfield. Wikipedia's summary credits the river's rugged topography with keeping development away from it, which is also why the parks matter: they are where the public can get down the bank.

Two fish from September to mid-May, and no snagging

Trout and salmon on every Lake Erie tributary follow the Lake Erie rules for the whole length of the stream: from September 1 through May 15 the daily limit is two, singly or combined, with a 12-inch minimum; from May 16 through August 31 it rises to five. Brook trout may not be kept on the Grand or its tributaries. Snagging any fish is illegal on the Grand from September 1 to April 30, which covers the whole steelhead season, and an Ohio fishing license is required throughout.

For bass and walleye, the Lake Erie district reaches up the Grand to the State Route 535 bridge. In the 2025-26 digest, bass there were five at 14 inches from March 1 to April 30, one at 18 inches from May 1 to late June, then five at 14 inches again. Those figures come from the latest digest online; ODNR's own site could not be reached for this guide, so check current dates.

Spring smallmouth after the steelhead leave

Ohio Fly Fishing Guides points to April and May for smallmouth moving into Lake Erie tributaries ahead of the spawn, with some lake-run fish staying through summer. On the Grand that overlaps the tail of the steelhead season, so a swing rod and a bass rod in the same car is not unusual in May. Chagrin River Outfitters switches its guides over to smallmouth and pike trips once its steelhead calendar closes at the end of April, and the state's 2024 steelhead plant on the Grand went in between April 23 and 30, so expect small, freshly stocked fish on the line that week.

Facts checked against

Flow ranges come from Chagrin River Outfitters' Grand River page; stocking numbers and strains from ODNR's 2021-2025 steelhead stocking summary; access points from ODNR's Grand River steelhead map; limits and snagging dates from the Ohio digest (2025-26 edition, the latest online); scenic designation from Wikipedia. The 2026 bass date for the end of the one-fish period was not available and is described only as late June.
