Nimbus Tailwater — Sacramento's Wild Trout fishery and the original Gold Rush river
The American River below Nimbus Dam near Rancho Cordova is the most accessible quality trout fishery for the Sacramento metropolitan area — a tailwater fishery created by cold releases from Folsom Lake that provides genuine wild trout fishing just minutes from California's state capital. Like the Boise River in Idaho and the Yakima River in Washington, the American below Nimbus demonstrates that world-class fly fishing can exist in surprisingly urban settings.
The Nimbus tailwater section (approximately 23 miles from the dam to the Sacramento confluence) supports wild rainbow averaging 12–16 inches in the coldest, most productive sections nearest the dam. The American Fisheries Society designated this stretch as one of California's premier wild trout resources, and CDFW's management has maintained fish quality despite the considerable fishing pressure generated by the Sacramento region's 2+ million residents.
The Gold Discovery State Historic Park at Sutter's Mill near Coloma — where James Marshall discovered gold in 1848 and set off the Gold Rush — sits on the South Fork of the American River upstream, giving the entire watershed extraordinary historical resonance. The river that launched America's most consequential westward migration now provides urban fly fishing to the descendants of those early settlers.
The American's steelhead and salmon runs — considerably reduced from historical levels — still provide meaningful fishing opportunities in the lower sections during fall and winter. Fall Chinook salmon enter the river in October and November, and the spectacle of large wild salmon in an urban river setting is genuinely moving.
Nimbus Dam — Tailwater Section
Access from Hazel Avenue near Nimbus Dam. The most productive cold-water section immediately below the dam. Walk-wade access on both banks.
Ancil Hoffman Park — Mid River
Ancil Hoffman County Park provides excellent river access with facilities. Good wild trout water in a park setting.
Sacramento — Lower River
Urban access near the Sacramento confluence. Salmon and steelhead fishing in fall and winter. Warmer water — primarily warmwater species in summer.
Rainbow Trout
Wild fish in the Nimbus tailwater section averaging 12–16 inches. Most active during winter and spring when water temperatures are optimal.
Chinook Salmon
Fall Chinook entering October-November. A remarkable urban wildlife spectacle. Fly fishing with large streamers and egg patterns.
Steelhead
Winter steelhead entering December-March. Reduced but present. Check CDFW for current status.
The American is Sacramento's home water — accessible enough to fish after work during prime hatches in fall and spring.
Winter fishing on the American can be excellent for both trout and steelhead — mild Sacramento Valley climate means comfortable cold-weather fishing.
