Arkansas River, Colorado
Brown's Canyon National Monument — Colorado's most accessible Gold Medal trout fishery
The Arkansas River between Salida and Cañon City is one of Colorado's most accessible and productive Gold Medal trout fisheries — a Blue Ribbon designated water that flows through the spectacular Brown's Canyon National Monument and provides over 100 miles of publicly accessible trout water. The combination of consistent flows from upstream releases, exceptional insect diversity, and convenient access from Denver (2.5 hours) makes the Arkansas the front range angler's most important destination river.
Brown's Canyon National Monument — designated in 2015 — encompasses one of the most dramatic sections of the Arkansas, where the river cuts through ancient granite walls over 1,000 feet high. The monument section is float-only due to access constraints, but the nearby Salida-Howard section offers excellent walk-wade water with a variety of character from broad glide to technical pocket water.
The Arkansas is a freestone river downstream of Turquoise Lake but takes on tailwater characteristics below several small diversion structures that moderate extreme flows. The river's diversity of flow types — fast pocket water, slow glides, deep canyon pools — creates habitat for multiple trout species and exceptional insect diversity. PMD, Caddis, and stonefly hatches are all well-documented and reliable.
The Salida and Buena Vista areas support excellent fly fishing infrastructure — shops, guides, and lodges that have made these mountain communities genuine fly fishing destinations. The river's accessibility from US-285 and US-50 means you can drive from Denver, be fishing by noon, and return the same day — a luxury that more remote destination rivers cannot offer.
Salida — River Park to Stone Bridge
Walk-wade access from multiple points in the Salida area. The Salida River Park provides easy access to good water. No boat required for excellent fishing.
Howard to Coaldale — Upper Canyon
US-50 parallels the river with multiple pull-offs. Good balance of wade access and float options. Typical gold medal quality throughout.
Brown's Canyon — Float Only
Float access only through the monument canyon. Put in at Ruby Mountain, take out at Hecla Junction. One of Colorado's finest float fishing experiences.
Brown Trout
Dominant in Gold Medal sections. Wild fish averaging 14–18 inches with the largest fish approaching 24 inches. Most active during PMD and Caddis hatches and fall pre-spawn.
Rainbow Trout
Present throughout in good numbers. Wild and stocked fish mix in accessible sections. Respond well to attractor dry flies and nymphs.
The Arkansas fishes well year-round from Salida — even January midges produce fish on mild days in the canyon sections.
Early season (April–May) can see significant runoff — check USGS flows before making the drive. Below 300 cfs the river can be difficult; above 1,500 cfs, wade fishing is unsafe.
Brown's Canyon float fishing is one of Colorado's finest — book a guided day float for the full experience including the dramatic canyon scenery.
The Salida River Park section fishes well in the evening during summer Caddis hatches — great for after-dinner fishing from town.
