Blacksmith Fork, Utah
Hyrum Canyon — Underrated freestone gem tucked between Logan and Brigham City
The Blacksmith Fork is one of Northern Utah's most underrated trout streams — a beautiful canyon freestone river that runs parallel to the more-famous Logan River just 15 miles to the north, yet sees a fraction of the fishing pressure. Flowing west from the Bear River Range through Hyrum Canyon before emptying into the Hyrum Reservoir, the Blacksmith Fork offers classic pocket-water fly fishing for wild rainbow and brown trout in a stunning limestone canyon.
The river's character is quintessential Northern Utah freestone: fast riffles, deep pools behind boulders, and undercut limestone banks where large brown trout lurk. The canyon section — accessible via UT-101 along the canyon floor — offers the most consistent fishing, with approximately 15 miles of fishable water ranging from intimate pocket water near the headwaters to wider, more open runs in the lower canyon.
Hatches on the Blacksmith Fork closely mirror those of the Logan River given their similar elevation, geology, and hydrology. The Salmonfly emergence in late May draws the most attention from visiting anglers, but the summer Caddis fishing is arguably more consistent and productive. The river runs high and off-color during spring runoff (typically mid-April through late May), so plan visits from mid-June onward or during the stable low-water conditions of late summer and fall.
The Blacksmith Fork is a perfect escape when the Logan River feels crowded. Its proximity to Cache Valley communities means you can be fishing within 20 minutes of Logan — yet midweek visits often find the canyon completely to yourself.
Lower Canyon — Below Hyrum Dam
Access from the Hyrum State Park area. River below the reservoir receives less attention. Good winter midge and BWO fishing when upper canyon is unfishable.
Main Canyon Section
UT-101 parallels the river through Hyrum Canyon. Multiple pull-offs provide direct access. This is the primary fishing water — approximately 15 miles of accessible canyon.
Upper Canyon — Above Hardware Ranch
Smaller, tighter water above the Hardware Ranch elk refuge. Cutthroat trout present in upper reaches. Excellent late-summer fishing when lower canyon warms.
Rainbow Trout
Primary species throughout the canyon section. Wild fish averaging 10–15 inches. Responsive to dry flies during hatches.
Brown Trout
Present throughout, concentrated in deeper pools. Larger than rainbows on average. Best targeted with streamers or nymphs near undercut banks.
Bonneville Cutthroat
Found in upper canyon reaches above Hardware Ranch. Utah's native trout — responsive to attractor dry flies.
Visit on weekdays — the Blacksmith Fork sees significantly less pressure than the Logan despite nearly identical fishing quality.
The Hardware Ranch section in late September and October offers exceptional brown trout fishing as fish move into pre-spawn mode.
Runoff typically clears 2–3 weeks later than the Logan due to higher headwater elevations. Be patient — the wait is worth it.
Evening Caddis hatches in July are exceptional and largely undocumented. Be on the water by 7pm for the best action.
