About the Blue River
Central Colorado — Summit County · Below Dillon Reservoir — Gold Medal Tailwater

The Blue River below Dillon Reservoir offers Gold Medal trout fishing in one of Colorado's most surprising locations — flowing through the heart of the Summit County ski resort corridor, it provides world-class tailwater fishing within minutes of Breckenridge, Keystone, and Arapahoe Basin. While skiers crowd the slopes above, wild brown and rainbow trout feed in cold, clear tailwater just below the base areas.

Cold releases from Dillon Reservoir maintain water temperatures in the trout zone year-round, creating a fishery that — like most great tailwaters — performs consistently when freestone rivers are either iced over in winter or running high and off-color in spring. The 2-mile Gold Medal section immediately below the dam is the most productive water: crystal-clear flows over bright gravel, with selective trout that require the same technical presentations demanded by Colorado's other Gold Medal tailwaters.

The Blue River corridor through Silverthorne and downstream toward the Colorado River confluence at Kremmling provides additional fishing opportunities beyond the Gold Medal section, though the quality diminishes as the river warms and collects agricultural inputs below the canyon. The Gold Medal section and the adjacent upper canyon are the focus for visiting fly fishers.

Winter and shoulder-season fishing are the Blue's genuine advantages — ski resort visitors can fish between runs in a way that simply isn't practical on more remote tailwaters. The combination of world-class skiing and world-class tailwater fishing in a single weekend is a legitimate Summit County selling point.

Access & Sections
Public access points and section descriptions

Dillon Reservoir Outlet — Gold Medal Section

Park at the reservoir outlet area. Walk-wade access along the most productive Gold Medal section. 2 miles of exceptional tailwater fishing closest to the dam.

Silverthorne — Town Access

Multiple access points through Silverthorne along the Blue River Parkway. River trail provides walk access to productive water. Easy from downtown.

Below Silverthorne — Canyon Section

CO-9 parallels the river downstream toward Kremmling. Good canyon fishing with less pressure than the dam section. Pulloffs along the highway.

Species & Regulations
What swims here and how you can fish for it

Brown Trout

Dominant in the Gold Medal section. Wild fish averaging 14–18 inches. Highly selective — educated by consistent fishing pressure. Most active during fall BWO hatches.

Rainbow Trout

Present throughout the Gold Medal section. Wild fish responding well to midge and PMD patterns in summer. Strong fighters in the Blue's current.

Regulations Summary
⚠ Colorado fishing license required. Gold Medal Water: catch and release, 2-fly artificial only. Check Colorado Parks and Wildlife for current Blue River specific regulations.
Pro Tips
Local knowledge from guides who fish this water
💡

Winter fishing on the Blue is genuinely excellent — midges hatch on mild days year-round and the ski resort crowds don't fish.

💡

The Gold Medal section is short (2 miles) and receives concentrated pressure — arrive early and work upstream from the parking area.

💡

Blue River fish are highly selective due to consistent pressure. Fish 6x tippet minimum and make precise, drag-free presentations.

💡

Ski + fish weekends in Breckenridge are an underrated Colorado experience — fish the morning before the lifts open, ski afternoons.
