Metolius River, Oregon
Camp Sherman — Oregon's most unique river emerges fully-formed from a volcanic spring
The Metolius River of central Oregon is one of the most unusual and magical rivers in the American West — it emerges from the ground fully formed near Camp Sherman, appearing as a substantial river from a massive volcanic spring rather than building gradually from small tributaries like conventional streams. The river flows clear, cold, and constant regardless of season, emerging at a consistent 48°F from the same volcanic aquifer that feeds much of central Oregon's remarkable spring creek system.
The Metolius is entirely designated as a Wild and Scenic River and managed as catch-and-release, artificial-lures-only throughout its accessible length from the springs to Lake Billy Chinook. This management has produced a population of wild rainbow, brown, and bull trout of extraordinary quality — fish that are well-conditioned, selective, and in genuinely superb health. The average rainbow in the Metolius's prime sections reaches 16–20 inches, with some exceptional specimens over 24 inches encountered by persistent anglers.
The river flows through old-growth ponderosa pine forest — Cathedral pines that rise 150 feet above the river corridor, creating a fishing environment of almost architectural grandeur. The pine forest filters the light, creates dappled shadows on the water, and provides a silence interrupted only by birdsong and the sounds of the river. It is one of the most beautiful river settings in Oregon.
Bull trout, a threatened species, are present throughout the Metolius and must be immediately released. Their presence is one of the river's conservation highlights — the Metolius is one of the few Oregon rivers where wild bull trout remain in fishable numbers.
Camp Sherman — Springs Area
Access from Camp Sherman on US-20 west of Sisters. Viewing platform at the spring source. Prime fishing downstream from the springs in the first 5 miles.
Lower Metolius — Below Canyon
Access via forest roads below the main Camp Sherman area. Less pressure, good fishing, canyon character. Some sections require moderate hiking.
Wizard Falls Hatchery Area
The hatchery area provides accessible fishing with good fish concentrations. Walk upstream or downstream from the hatchery for the most productive water.
Rainbow Trout
Dominant species, averaging 16–20 inches in prime sections. Wild fish of exceptional condition. Highly selective — technical presentations required. Most active during Caddis hatches and evening PMD emergences.
Brown Trout
Present in good numbers, particularly in slower sections below the springs. Averaging 14–18 inches. Most active during evening hatches.
Bull Trout
Present throughout — a conservation priority. Immediately release any encountered. One of Oregon's most significant remaining bull trout populations.
The Metolius requires the finest tippet in your kit — 6x minimum, and 7x for fish that have been pressured. The river's clarity means everything is visible.
Evening PMD hatches in July are the Metolius at its finest — fish rising throughout the cathedral pines in fading light is a genuinely transcendent experience.
The spring source viewing area is worth visiting even for non-anglers — watching a full river emerge from the ground is genuinely remarkable.
Camp Sherman has modest but authentic Oregon forest camp character — stay at one of the cabin complexes for the full Metolius experience.
