Ogden River, Utah
Ogden Canyon — Blue Ribbon tailwater minutes from Utah's second-largest city
The Ogden River is one of Utah's most accessible Blue Ribbon trout fisheries — a tailwater that flows through dramatic Ogden Canyon just minutes from downtown Ogden, making quality fly fishing available to a larger urban population than almost any other designated Blue Ribbon water in the state. For Weber County residents and Salt Lake City anglers looking for an afternoon option, the Ogden River offers surprising quality in a remarkably convenient package.
Below Pineview Reservoir, the river runs cold and clear through the limestone walls of Ogden Canyon before entering the city. The canyon section — approximately 5 miles of Blue Ribbon designated water — holds populations of wild rainbow and brown trout that consistently surprise visiting anglers with their size and selectivity. Fish averaging 14–18 inches are not uncommon in the prime pools, and the catch-and-release regulations in the upper canyon protect a quality trophy fishery.
The river's proximity to the city means it receives significant fishing pressure, particularly on weekends and after work hours during summer. Early morning visits — ideally on weekdays — reward with less competition and more cooperative fish. The canyon is beautiful in its own right: towering limestone walls, cottonwood-lined banks, and the contrast of wild trout water running through what is functionally a suburban environment.
Hatches mirror those of the Weber River given similar elevation and water chemistry: midges dominate in winter and early spring, the Caddis hatch provides excellent dry fly action through summer, and Blue-Winged Olives bookend the season in spring and fall.
Ogden Canyon — UT-39
UT-39 parallels the river through the canyon. Multiple designated pull-offs with stairs to the river. The primary fishing access for the Blue Ribbon section.
Below Pineview Dam
Closest access to the reservoir outlet. Consistent cold flows year-round. Best midge and early-season BWO fishing. Small parking area at the dam.
City Section — Ogden Parkway
Below the canyon, the river flows through city parks with good public access. Less technical fishing but accessible for casual anglers and beginners.
Rainbow Trout
Dominant species in the canyon section. Wild fish averaging 12–16 inches. Selectively fed due to consistent pressure — more technical than typical Utah tailwater fish.
Brown Trout
Present in deeper canyon pools. Larger than rainbows, more nocturnal. Best targeted early morning or evening when fishing pressure is lowest.
Visit on weekday mornings for the best experience — weekend afternoons on the Ogden can feel crowded relative to its size.
The canyon is shaded until mid-morning — don't give up on midge and BWO fishing until the sun hits the water.
Pressure has educated these fish significantly — use longer, finer tippet than you think necessary (6x minimum on the upper section).
The Mother's Day Caddis hatch on the Ogden is often overlooked in favor of the Provo and Weber — but it happens and produces excellent fishing.
