Technique Guides — a practical 2026 guide covering timing, tactics, conditions and live reports to help you plan your next trip with confidence.

Technique Guides: Reports, Conditions & Resources

Our technique guides break down the core skills of western fly fishing, from reading water to landing fish responsibly. Work through these technique guides and you will catch more trout on every river you visit.

Core skills

Start with reading a river and a clean, drag-free drift, then build out your toolbox: nymphing, dry-fly fishing, and streamers each shine in different conditions.

Fish responsibly and safely

Good catch and release and wading safety keep both the fishery and you in good shape. Before any trip, we cross-check USGS Water Data for live flows before any trip and check the forecast so you can match technique to the day.

What to bring

A 9-foot 5-weight rod, a floating line, 4X to 5X leaders, and a box covering mayflies, caddis, stoneflies, midges, and a few terrestrials handle most western trout situations. Add split shot and indicators for nymphing, a couple of streamers, polarized sunglasses, and waders for the season, and always confirm local regulations and licensing before you fish.
