The upper Colorado River in Grand County, Colorado bears little resemblance to the massive desert river most people picture when they hear its name. Here, near its headwaters in the Gore and Tenmile ranges, the Colorado is an intimate mountain river — cold, clear, and remarkably productive — flowing through open ranch valley and dramatic canyon before gathering volume on its 1,400-mile journey to the Gulf of California.

The Blue Ribbon section between Parshall and Kremmling — known as the "Pumphouse Section" — is the Colorado's finest and most accessible trout water in the state. Tailwater character from upstream diversion structures maintains consistent cold flows, supporting exceptional populations of rainbow and brown trout that average 14–18 inches. The combination of flat glides, riffles, and the dramatic cliffs of the Gore Canyon downstream creates a variety of water types that rewards diverse fly fishing approaches.

The Pumphouse section is a classic float or wade river — wide enough for productive drift boat floats but with sufficient wade access from the Pumphouse Recreation Area for anglers without boats. Summer PMD and Caddis hatches define the peak dry fly season, while fall BWO and streamer fishing for large pre-spawn browns extends the quality fishing well into October.

Gore Canyon — the dramatic gorge downstream of Kremmling — is accessible only by a challenging hike or Class IV–V rafting, but rewards with some of the most spectacular canyon scenery in Colorado and largely undisturbed fish populations. The canyon section sees a fraction of the pressure of the upper Blue Ribbon water despite holding fish of equal or greater quality.
