About the Colorado River
Northwestern Colorado — Grand County · Parshall to Kremmling — Blue Ribbon Tailwater

The upper Colorado River in Grand County, Colorado bears little resemblance to the massive desert river most people picture when they hear its name. Here, near its headwaters in the Gore and Tenmile ranges, the Colorado is an intimate mountain river — cold, clear, and remarkably productive — flowing through open ranch valley and dramatic canyon before gathering volume on its 1,400-mile journey to the Gulf of California.

The Blue Ribbon section between Parshall and Kremmling — known as the "Pumphouse Section" — is the Colorado's finest and most accessible trout water in the state. Tailwater character from upstream diversion structures maintains consistent cold flows, supporting exceptional populations of rainbow and brown trout that average 14–18 inches. The combination of flat glides, riffles, and the dramatic cliffs of the Gore Canyon downstream creates a variety of water types that rewards diverse fly fishing approaches.

The Pumphouse section is a classic float or wade river — wide enough for productive drift boat floats but with sufficient wade access from the Pumphouse Recreation Area for anglers without boats. Summer PMD and Caddis hatches define the peak dry fly season, while fall BWO and streamer fishing for large pre-spawn browns extends the quality fishing well into October.

Gore Canyon — the dramatic gorge downstream of Kremmling — is accessible only by a challenging hike or Class IV–V rafting, but rewards with some of the most spectacular canyon scenery in Colorado and largely undisturbed fish populations. The canyon section sees a fraction of the pressure of the upper Blue Ribbon water despite holding fish of equal or greater quality.

Access & Sections
Public access points and section descriptions

Pumphouse Recreation Area

The primary access point for the Blue Ribbon section. Paved parking and boat ramp. Float trips typically run from Pumphouse to State Bridge — approximately 16 miles. Walk-wade access from the recreation area.

State Bridge

Take-out and access point for the middle river float. Good wade access in the State Bridge area. Excellent summer Caddis water.

Gore Canyon — Hike-In

Access via the Colorado Trail near Kremming. Strenuous hike required. Float access only for the canyon interior. Rewards with untouched canyon water.

Species & Regulations
What swims here and how you can fish for it

Rainbow Trout

Dominant in the upper Blue Ribbon section. Wild fish averaging 14–18 inches. Most active during summer PMD and Caddis hatches. Strong fighters in the Colorado's powerful current.

Brown Trout

Present throughout, dominant in lower canyon sections. Larger average size than rainbows. Exceptional fall pre-spawn fishing with streamers in October.

Regulations Summary
⚠ Colorado fishing license required. Blue Ribbon Water has special regulations in designated sections — check Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Some sections require artificial lures and flies only. Catch and release encouraged.
Pro Tips
Local knowledge from guides who fish this water
💡

The Pumphouse to State Bridge float is one of Colorado's premier float fishing experiences — book a guide for the full experience.

💡

Gore Canyon is genuinely remote — only attempt it with experienced companions and proper wilderness preparedness.

💡

Summer Caddis hatches on the upper Colorado rival the Frying Pan in intensity — fish the evening rises from mid-June through August.

💡

The upper Colorado near its headwaters (Granby area) gets dramatically less pressure than the Blue Ribbon section — consider exploring headwater sections in July and August.
